Question 21 · Early recovery

How are stairs approached after hip replacement?

Quick answer

What the sources support

If you need to use steps or stairs, a physiotherapist or another member of your team may assess and practise them with you before discharge. Use the technique and walking aid recommended for you.

Provider variation

What may differ

A statement that stairs were easy or difficult is hard to interpret without the number of steps, railings, assistance, walking aids and the person's instructions. No patient-experience count or timing claim is made here.

Medical / provider guidance

Technique depends on your assessment

AAOS includes managing a small number of stairs among common discharge goals. Provider guidance describes practising steps or stairs with a therapist when needed. Railings, walking aids, the number and shape of steps, weight-bearing instructions and individual function all matter.

  • Follow the stair method demonstrated by your own therapist.
  • Ask for an assessment if stairs are part of your route home and you are not confident using them.
